Lead Hardness Tester for Reloading and Shooting

LEE Lead Hardness Tester for Reloading and Ballistics Applications.

This precision instrument is designed to accurately determine the Brinell hardness number (BHN) of alloyed lead bullets and cast projectiles, essential for optimizing bullet performance in metallic and semi-metallic reloading processes.

To operate, securely mount the hardness tester onto a single-stage reloading press, ensuring stable and consistent pressure application during testing.

Insert the specially designed Shell Holder included in the kit into the press ram. This Shell Holder is engineered to perfectly accommodate the lead sample, providing a stable base for accurate indentation.

Place the lead bullet or casting to be tested directly onto the Shell Holder. Carefully lower the press ram so that the hardened steel ball penetrator tip of the tester contacts the lead surface, applying controlled pressure to create an indentation.

After indentation, utilize the included LEE pocket microscope to precisely measure the diameter of the indentation mark. This measurement is critical for determining the exact Brinell hardness number.

Consult the comprehensive Brinell hardness reference chart supplied with the kit to correlate the indentation diameter to the corresponding BHN value. This data enables reloaders and ballistic technicians to assess bullet hardness, ensuring optimal performance, barrel life, and accuracy.

The testing procedure involves pressing a hardened steel ball penetrator into the bullet’s surface using a standard single-stage press. The resulting indentation is then measured with the LEE pocket microscope, providing a reliable and repeatable method for evaluating lead hardness in reloading and ballistic quality control.
